Atmos Energy to Flare Natural Gas on Colwell Boulevard in Irving

Atmos Energy crews and contractors will oversee a controlled natural gas flaring on Colwell Boulevard about half a mile north of State Highway 114 in Irving, Texas (Mapsco 21B-K). The flare is part of a pipeline relocation project and will last about six hours beginning Tuesday night, December 1, 2009 at 11 p.m.

“Flares” or “flaring” is a standard industry practice to safely burn natural gas that needs to be removed from a specific section of pipeline so that employees can work on the pipe. Residents in the area will notice a large controlled flame and moderate noise for approximately six hours. The flare will begin at 11 p.m.

Tuesday and will last until about five the next morning. The City of Irving will close Colwell Boulevard at 10 p.m. and will reopen it after the flaring process is completed.

Atmos Energy is relocating a section of 24-inch steel pipeline in support of the Texas Department of Transportation’s widening of State Highway 114 and Northwest Highway. The Irving Fire Department, city officials, 911 operators and others have been notified of the flaring.
